Elevated official travel advice
Exercise a high degree of caution and respect border restrictions
Australia advises a high degree of caution overall because of terrorism, violent crime and civil unrest, with higher levels in some border areas. The United Kingdom warns that attacks cannot be ruled out, demonstrations should be avoided, theft occurs in bazaars and on public transport, roads can be poorly lit and driving standards erratic. Use licensed or app-booked taxis and modern vehicles, carry your passport, protect valuables on trains and ask before photographing government buildings, metro infrastructure, bridges, airports, checkpoints or military sites. The Afghanistan crossing is closed to foreigners; this edition excludes its neutral zone, informal border routes and any restricted site without explicit local permission. Earthquakes, heat, winter mountain weather, limited cash access outside main cities and sudden border closures require current checks and appropriate insurance.
