Roads & rail journeys · Svolvær — Henningsvær — Reine — Å
Drive the Lofoten road beneath the midnight sun
Follow the E10 between fishing villages, pale beaches and serrated peaks while the Arctic summer sun refuses to leave the horizon.
Start in Svolvær and let the road become slower as it crosses bridges and causeways toward the outer islands. Henningsvær brings harbour life and contemporary art; farther west, red rorbuer gather below walls of rock, beaches open unexpectedly and the road finally narrows toward Reine and the village of Å.
Four to six days is more honest than racing the archipelago in one. Use a few bases, reserve accommodation well ahead and leave space for changing weather. Pull over only in marked places, avoid blocking local roads, buy from island businesses and walk beyond the famous stops—the best midnight light often arrives after day visitors have gone.
