Ride the Flåm Railway down to Nærøyfjord
Descend from the Bergen Railway into Flåm on one of Europe’s steepest adhesion lines, then continue through the narrow UNESCO fjord landscape.
Change trains at mountain-bound Myrdal and take a window seat for a railway that loses roughly 866 metres in just over twenty kilometres. Tunnels turn through the mountainside, the train pauses beside Kjosfossen and the valley gradually opens toward Flåm, farms and the innermost reach of Aurlandsfjord.
The strongest version continues by electric vessel or ferry into Nærøyfjord rather than ending at the busy quay. Build in time between train and boat, reserve popular departures and consider travelling outside the midday peak; low winter light and frozen waterfalls give the railway a different, quieter character without diminishing the engineering drama.
