Culture & heritage · Vågen harbour — Bryggen lanes — Schøtstuene
Walk through the Hanseatic passages of Bryggen
Leave Bergen’s harbour frontage and enter the narrow timber passages where trade, fire and restoration have shaped the city for centuries.
Begin across Vågen, where Bryggen reads as a disciplined row of ochre and red gables, then cross the harbour and disappear between them. The passages narrow, timber floors tilt and small openings reveal workshops and internal courtyards that make the old trading quarter feel more complex than its famous façade.
Go early or late when cruise-day traffic thins, and give the interiors as much attention as the waterfront photograph. The Hanseatic Museum’s associated Schøtstuene assembly rooms add the human story of merchants, apprentices, winter meals and fire risk; nearby Bergenhus extends the walk into Norway’s medieval royal history.
