Cruise or cycle the Canal du Midi
Follow the Canal du Midi from Toulouse through the watershed at Naurouze and Castelnaudary to Carcassonne, travelling by all-road bicycle or a slow self-drive boat.
Brick-lined Toulouse gives way to towpaths, locks and long green corridors. The gradual rise toward Naurouze is almost imperceptible until the canal crosses its historic watershed, then bends through Lauragais toward Castelnaudary. Arriving below Carcassonne after several days makes the engineering feel continuous: not a set of monuments, but a working idea stretched across the landscape.
Use an all-road, trekking or gravel bicycle because surfaces change between pavement, compact earth, roots and rougher canal-bank sections. Divide the route into short stages, pre-book luggage or boat logistics and carry offline navigation. Boat users must complete the operator briefing and observe lock instructions. In either mode, slow down around walkers, bridges, moorings and fragile banks.
