Cross Strasbourg from its cathedral to Petite France

Walk from Strasbourg's rose-coloured cathedral through the lanes of Grande Île to Petite France's canals, covered bridges and broad Vauban Dam terrace.

Best timeYear-roundDurationHalf dayEnergyEasy

Begin beneath the cathedral's intricate west front and allow the narrow surrounding streets to frame its immense spire. Cross Grande Île toward Saint-Thomas, then follow the water into Petite France, where former millers' and tanners' houses lean over the channels. Finish above the Barrage Vauban with the old city gathered into one view.

Check cathedral visiting times around services and enter as a respectful visitor rather than interrupting worship. The route is short, but cobbles and bridges reward comfortable footwear. Go early for quieter lanes, revisit Petite France after blue hour if staying overnight and use the Vauban Dam terrace only during its posted opening hours.
