Food & drink · Saint-Nicaise hill — historic crayères — cellar galleries — guided tasting
Descend into the Champagne cellars of Reims
Descend through ancient chalk pits beneath Reims to see bottles ageing in cool galleries, then taste with a guide who connects method, time and terroir.
At street level the great houses appear composed and ceremonial; below Saint-Nicaise, their scale becomes geological. Stairs lead into chalk chambers cut long before modern Champagne, where temperature and darkness make slow ageing possible. Back above ground, a structured tasting turns bubbles, acidity and texture into evidence of choices made in vineyards and cellars.
Reserve directly with a house well in advance and confirm the language, duration, stair access and tasting format. Cellars remain cool throughout summer, so bring a layer and stable shoes. Never drive after tasting; Reims's main houses can be reached by tram, taxi or a booked guide. Alcohol-free and under-age visitor arrangements vary and must be checked beforehand.
