Walk into the Cirque de Gavarnie

Walk from Gavarnie village toward the great semicircle of cliffs and its 422-metre waterfall, using the Bellevue Plateau for a quieter, broader approach when conditions permit.

Best timeJune — October, depending on snow and trail conditionsDuration4–6 hoursEnergyModerate

The cirque appears early but refuses to grow familiar: each kilometre enlarges the cliff bands and thins the valley into a high mountain amphitheatre. A Bellevue approach lifts the route above the busiest track before rejoining the basin. Near the traditional hôtellerie, the waterfall finally occupies the full headwall and the scale becomes easier to feel than to photograph.

Check the official route, snow, storm and access conditions on the day. The broad classic track is not a promise that the final waterfall approach is safe: loose rock, snow patches, mist and unmarked ground can require an early turnaround. Wear boots, carry warm and waterproof layers, water and offline navigation, start early and never continue beneath cliffs during unstable weather.
