Nature & wildlife · La Mongie cable car — summit terraces — sunset — guided astronomy — Charvin dome — summit room
Watch the stars from Pic du Midi
Stay overnight at 2,877 metres on Pic du Midi, watching sunset over the Pyrenees before guided naked-eye and telescope observation beneath protected dark skies.
Day visitors leave with the last cable car and the summit changes character. The Pyrenees flatten into a dark horizon beneath sunset, then staff introduce the sky as the Earth turns rather than racing through a list of objects. Access to the Charvin dome and its 400-millimetre telescope connects personal wonder with a working mountain observatory's scientific history.
Book far ahead: summit rooms and dates are extremely limited, and astronomy is weather-dependent. Bring only the permitted overnight bag plus very warm layers; wind and altitude can feel severe even in summer. Consult a doctor if altitude presents a health concern, hydrate, move slowly and follow all cable-car and observatory instructions. Cloud does not trigger an improvised outdoor excursion.
