Cities & architecture · Abbesses — Rue Lepic — vineyard — Place du Tertre — Sacré-Cœur
Walk Montmartre before Paris wakes
Climb from Abbesses through quiet lanes, surviving windmills and the small vineyard to reach Sacré-Cœur as first light spreads across the roofs of Paris.
Start below the hill while shutters are still closed and follow Rue Lepic past traces of the old village. Detour toward the vineyard and Lapin Agile, cross Place du Tertre before portrait easels take over, then reach the parvis of Sacré-Cœur as the wide city slowly gains colour and its morning traffic begins.
Check sunrise time and metro operating hours, wear shoes with grip on wet cobbles and expect many stairs. The basilica remains an active place of worship, so enter quietly if open and never treat services as sightseeing. Finish downhill near Abbesses for breakfast once local businesses begin opening rather than expecting facilities at dawn.
