Voyage along Padirac’s underground river

Descend 103 metres into the Gouffre de Padirac, then board a small guided boat to follow its subterranean river beneath immense limestone chambers.

Best timeEaster holidays — early November on published datesDurationAbout 1.5–2 hoursEnergyModerate

Daylight narrows to a circle above the chasm before built stairs and lifts lead into cooler galleries. At the river, movement becomes nearly silent as a boatman guides the craft across dark water toward chambers shaped on a scale that surface clues never reveal. The walking section resumes among deposits, pools and vaulted stone before the long return to daylight.

Reserve a timed ticket and arrive before the stated check-in cutoff. The cave remains about 13–14°C even in summer, so bring a warm layer and closed shoes with grip. The standard route includes many steps and wet surfaces; consult the official accessibility information before booking. Follow the photography rules, touch no formations and keep voices low around guides and boats.
