Cities & architecture · Quai des Belges — Hôtel de Ville — Accoules steps — Vieille Charité — La Major — Fort Saint-Jean
Cross Marseille from the Vieux-Port into Le Panier
Leave the boat-lined Vieux-Port and climb through Le Panier's steps, small squares and layered façades before descending beside La Major to Fort Saint-Jean.
Start beneath the mirrored canopy where fish stalls and ferries keep the old harbour active. Slip behind the Hôtel de Ville and climb through Accoules into Le Panier, reading Greek origins, wartime destruction and postwar rebuilding in its irregular lanes. Vieille Charité provides a calm architectural centre before La Major and Fort Saint-Jean return the route to the water.
The official old-town walk covers about 2.3 kilometres but includes repeated steps, cobbles and roughly forty-six metres of ascent. Go early in hot weather, carry water and keep valuables secure in crowded port areas. Le Panier is a residential district: photograph art and façades without blocking doors, windows or the narrow paths used by residents.
