Join the evening procession at Lourdes

Enter the sanctuary quietly at the Grotto of Massabielle, then walk with the multilingual candlelight procession toward the illuminated Rosary Basilica.

Best timeApril — October for the 21:00 torchlight processionDuration2–3 hours in the eveningEnergyEasy

Arrive before darkness and allow the steady movement around the grotto to set the pace. When candles gather, many languages enter the same sequence of prayer and song as the procession crosses the sanctuary. Wheelchair users, carers and volunteers remain central to the ritual, giving the evening a human structure that can move both committed pilgrims and respectful non-believers.

Confirm the daily sanctuary schedule before attending and arrive early enough to understand the route and accessibility arrangements. Participation is free; candles are optional. Dress for worship, silence phones and never photograph sick, grieving or praying individuals without clear consent. Observe rather than imitate devotional acts you do not understand, and give priority to pilgrims, carers and mobility equipment.
