Climb Europe’s great Atlantic dune at Pilat

Climb from coastal pine forest onto the shifting crest of the Dune du Pilat, with the Atlantic, Banc d’Arguin and Arcachon basin opening on either side.

Best timeMarch — November; dawn or late afternoonDuration2–3 hoursEnergyModerate

The ascent begins in shade before sand replaces the forest floor and every step starts to slide. At the crest, the landscape suddenly separates into strong bands: dark pines inland, pale dune underfoot and tidal blues toward Banc d’Arguin. Walk only as far along the ridge as time and wind permit, watching how erosion and deposition constantly redraw its edge.

Enter through the official reception area and check same-day access information, because wind, erosion, fire risk and protected-beach measures can change the usable route. The staircase is seasonal; outside its operating period the climb is directly on sand. Carry water and sun protection, keep away from fragile vegetation and cliff-like dune faces, and never enter a temporarily prohibited beach sector.
