Cross Piana’s red calanches from road to watchtower

Cross the calanches before traffic builds, pause in Piana and then hike the open Capu Rossu peninsula to the Turghiu tower for a high view back along the coast. The experience is designed as a deliberate route rather than a quick stop.

On the D81, red granite closes around the road in ribs, windows and improbable overhangs. The afternoon path reverses the relationship: after descending through low maquis it climbs sharply to a stone tower, where the calanches become one element in a much larger chain of capes, gulfs and sea routes. Moving through Early D81 calanches crossing, then Piana village, then D824 Capu Rossu trailhead, then exposed peninsula path, then Turghiu watchtower viewpoint, then same-path return, then Arone recovery stop gives the day a clear sequence and leaves enough time to notice how the place works beyond its headline image.

Use a confident designated driver and never stop in the D81 carriageway for photographs; take signed pull-offs or a shuttle where available. The Capu Rossu route is exposed, rocky and hotter on the return climb than it first appears, so start early with ample water, sun protection, grippy footwear and no fire. Turn around for heat, wind, thunder or fatigue and avoid climbing the tower in unsafe conditions. Confirm the live official calendar and access conditions before departure, reserve any capacity-controlled element, and follow instructions from local staff or guides. Carry the equipment and layers appropriate to the stated season.
