Drive the volcanic spine of the Chaîne des Puys
Leave Clermont-Ferrand on the plateau roads, stop among the puys for geological context and continue through Orcival to Lac de Guéry and Mont-Dore. The experience is designed as a deliberate route rather than a quick stop.
Black cathedral stone gives way to pasture and repeated cones almost immediately west of the city. Lemptégy exposes the inside of a volcano, while later views toward Tuilière, Sanadoire and Guéry change the vocabulary from young puys to an older eroded massif. Moving through Clermont-Ferrand, then Orcines, then Col des Goules, then Volcan de Lemptégy, then Col de la Moreno, then Orcival, then Lac de Guéry, then Mont-Dore gives the day a clear sequence and leaves enough time to notice how the place works beyond its headline image.
Check winter closures, fog and road conditions, appoint a rested driver and use only signed parking areas. Never stop on narrow verges for photographs, avoid entering private pasture or eroded informal paths and keep the day to a few meaningful stops so driving does not overwhelm the protected landscape. Confirm the live official calendar and access conditions before departure, reserve any capacity-controlled element, and follow instructions from local staff or guides. Carry the equipment and layers appropriate to the stated season.
