Walk Stevenson’s Cévennes ridge to Florac

Follow the GR70 for roughly 28.5 kilometres from Le Pont-de-Montvert over Col du Sapet and down through Cocurès and Bédouès to Florac. The experience is designed as a deliberate route rather than a quick stop.

Best timeMay — June and September — OctoberDuration8–9 hoursEnergyChallenging

The Tarn bridge recalls Stevenson’s 1878 arrival before the track climbs hard away from the village. On the ridge, Mont Lozère recedes and the Cévennes open southward; later hamlets, chestnut slopes and the descent to Florac turn literary memory into sustained physical geography. Moving through Le Pont-de-Montvert, then GR70 ascent, then Col du Sapet, then Cocurès, then Bédouès, then Florac gives the day a clear sequence and leaves enough time to notice how the place works beyond its headline image.

Treat this as a long point-to-point mountain day: start at first light, carry sufficient water and food, load the official route offline and prearrange luggage, lodging and return transport. Check heat, storm and wildfire restrictions, avoid bringing an animal without trained welfare support, and use the GR68 shortcut only as a conscious safety decision. Confirm the live official calendar and access conditions before departure, reserve any capacity-controlled element, and follow instructions from local staff or guides. Carry the equipment and layers appropriate to the stated season.
