Cycle Burgundy’s Route des Grands Crus

Pedal south from Beaune through the vineyard climats of Pommard, Volnay and Meursault, pausing for one reserved cellar visit before finishing in Santenay.

Best timeApril — OctoberDurationFull day; approximately 25–30 kilometresEnergyModerate

Leaving Beaune, narrow roads and vineyard paths replace the town within minutes. Stone walls divide named climats whose small changes in slope, soil and exposure underpin Burgundy's reputation. Village fountains and church towers give the ride a measured rhythm, while one thoughtful tasting provides context for the land rather than turning the route into a succession of samples.

Reserve bicycles and one tasting in advance, confirm opening days and arrange a train, transfer or two-way rental for the finish. The Voie des Vignes and local lanes vary in surface and traffic, so use a suitable bike, helmet and offline route. Taste modestly, never ride impaired, carry water and respect workers, machinery and private vineyard rows during the growing and harvest seasons.
