Walk the corsair walls of Saint-Malo

Circle Saint-Malo above the granite walls, reading the harbour, privateer mansions, offshore forts and tidal beaches as parts of one maritime city.

Best timeYear-round; best near dawn or late afternoonDuration2–3 hoursEnergyEasy

Climb near Porte Saint-Vincent before the lanes fill and let the ramparts establish Saint-Malo's scale. From Bastion Saint-Louis, shipowners' houses face the port that financed them; farther north, forts and reefs reveal a defensive system exposed and concealed by the tide. The final wall sections look inward across a city painstakingly reconstructed after 1944.

Allow far longer than the half-hour needed to walk the roughly 1.7-kilometre circuit without stopping. Wind and wet granite can make steps slippery, and several access points are steep. Check the tide before considering any beach or offshore-fort detour, return immediately when water rises and never improvise a crossing. Early morning gives residents and narrow streets more space.
