Water & coast · Bonifacio marina — harbour narrows — Grain de Sable — cliff base — permitted sea-cave approaches
Sail beneath Bonifacio’s limestone citadel
Leave Bonifacio's deep harbour and follow the white cliff base beneath the citadel, passing the Grain de Sable and wind-cut cave entrances.
The boat moves through a narrow harbour that conceals the open strait until the limestone walls suddenly turn seaward. From below, old houses appear to continue the cliff face while the citadel hangs above undercut rock. Grain de Sable, pale ledges and dark cave mouths give the coast a sculptural rhythm before the vessel returns through the protected narrows.
Choose a licensed small-group operator, ask about vessel capacity and never expect access to every cave: several are closed for safety and conservation. Depart only in suitable sea conditions, bring a wind layer and sun protection and follow the skipper's seating instructions. Quieter sailing, kayak or paddle options reduce noise where ability and weather allow.
