Culture & heritage · Amphitheatre — ancient theatre — Place du Forum — Espace Van Gogh — Rhône
Walk between Roman Arles and Van Gogh’s city
Link Arles's amphitheatre, theatre and Roman streets with the places Van Gogh painted, ending beside the Rhône where the city lights meet the river.
Enter the amphitheatre early and climb high enough to see the Roman monument embedded in the modern town. Continue through the ancient theatre to Place du Forum, then follow marked reproductions toward the former hospital courtyard and riverbank. At dusk, the Rhône restores the blue-and-gold contrast that made Arles so productive for Van Gogh.
Buy the combined monument pass if visiting several Roman sites and check event closures before arrival. The Van Gogh trail marks viewpoints rather than a permanent collection of his paintings, so bring reproductions or use the official map for comparison. In summer, schedule exposed ruins early and reserve the shaded museums for peak heat.
